A Tour of Cincinnati

When we came here, we had no idea what to expect. The only thing we knew about Cincinnati was that they had a radio stationed called WKRP. (I know, you just sang the theme song in your head, right?) I probably also could have told you that they had the Bengals and the Reds, but that was honestly the end of it.

Turns out, Cincinnati is a very beautiful city. It is an old city as well, founded in 1788. There is tons of amazing architecture, especially when it comes to churches. As the city grew and flourished, people started calling it the 'Queen City.' When Longfellow called Cincinnati the 'Queen of the West' in one of his poems, it cemented the nickname, and you still see and hear it all the time.

We went to a Reds game the other night and it turns out that the Reds were the first regular professional baseball team in the country, officially organized in 1869. And even though they won't put Pete Rose in the hall of fame, people here still love him, and 'Pete Rose Way' runs past the Great American Ball Park.

One of my favorite things about Cincinnati is the Ohio River running right through the middle of everything. The sports stadiums, the aquarium and lots of other stuff sit right on it. Several bridges span it including one called the 'Purple People Bridge' and is for walkers only. There is a cool park right on the bank called Sawyer Point. We love it there. On Labor Day they race about 100,000 rubber ducks along the river. People purchase ducks, they are dumped off the Purple People Bridge, and which ever one crosses the finish line first wins a new car. The money goes to feed the homeless in Cincinnati.

Cincinnati Chili is a big deal. It's really different from any chili you've eaten before. It came over with Greek immigrants. I think they might actually have more Skyline Chili places here than they do McDonald's. They serve it over spaghetti or little hot dogs called coneys. Think there's enough cheese on that chili?

We rented a 6 person bike at Sawyer Point this day to toodle up and down the Ohio river. It was cool.
